Ground transportation from San Jose to Tamarindo is a viable and practical option if you are flying into SJO International Airport. San Jose to Tamarindo

Travel distance is approximately 270 Km (roughly 169 miles) and, depending on traffic, can take between 3.5 and 4 hours. This might sound like a lot of time and driving, but you will be surprise how fast time goes by on Costa Rican roads – it is not the same to drive 3 to 4 hours on a monotonous, cruised controlled interstate highway journey than on a picturesque, two lane road where you can enjoy some great local scenery (see pictures below).

It is also perfectly safe to travel at night, so if you are arriving late at SJO Airport why not head directly to Tamarindo and wake up right next to the beach.
